In the News - Norm's Diner
Groton, Connecticut's only 1953 Silk City diner has closed it's doors this week. Whether you knew it as Paula's, or maybe Tugboat Annie's, the diner right off I-95 exit 86 southbound or 85 northbound is a longtime resident of the community. Katie Warchut writes about the diner in her article for today's edition of The Day. According to the article Norm's will reopen, though it's unclear just when.
The exterior styling of Norm's is the more utilitarian design style of a Silk City. Two images come to mind when we think of Silk City Diners: flickr pro gailf548's picture of the Halfway Diner and our file photo of Johnny B's Glenmont Diner. The Halfway is an example of that classic styling reminiscent of a train car. Johnny B's a mid-1950's, has the roof overhang with recessed lighting. Though its most distinctive feature is the very large plate glass windows. We'd say they measure around 2/3's of the exterior's height. Not to be outdone, Manno diners extended the window's square footage further, almost from ground to ceiling. An example of this is seen in Agilitynut's page for the White Circle Diner. Norm's exterior also reminds us of the former Milford Diner.
Rosie's Diner, the other Silk City diner left the area in June 2006. Some might say the diner had been at its Gold Star Highway location "forever." We found pictures of the former Rosie's on Diversified Diner's website.
We'll post more information about Norm's as it becomes available. Until then, Katie Warchut's entire article may be read here.
