Today in Diner History. . .

On this date in 2007 the Victory Diner was moved from 1781 Richmond Road to storage at the Parks Department in Midland Beach, Staten Island, NY. Prior to this move it had been there since 1964. Here's a picture of this 1940s Kullman Challenger model diner at its Richmond Road location. The Staten Island Advance posted a video of the diner moving.

The diner's appeared in Easy Money and The Education of Max Bickford.

In the News - Park Classic Diner

New Mexico Business Weekly is reprinting an article from the Pittsburgh Business Times. The Times reports the closure of three Park Classic Diner locations. Two of these are in Pennsylvania and one is in Ohio.

According to this article, Brian Butko mentions their Monroeville, Pennsylvania location is a Kullman built diner which opened in 2001.

A Look Back on October 23rd

The Red Hawk Diner, a 2001 Kullman, opened its doors on campus at Montclair State University in New Jersey. flickr members DBlake14 and jacquesduteal each have a picture of the diner in their photostream.

Fairfield Diner and Vegetarian Enclave

On this date in 2005 the Fairfield Diner and Vegetarian Enclave closed. The Anthis family had operated this diner since 1993. Prompting closure of the diner is the expansion plan of the car dealership next door. As seen in the picture taken about a year ago, some of the environmental style exterior has fallen off.

This diner was formerly known as the Eldorado Diner. According to Mike Engle, the diner was manufactured by Kullman in 1990. We should note that Mike collaborated with Mario Monti on the book entitled, "Diners Of New York."

The Anthis family owns another diner, the Shoreline Diner & Vegetarian Enclave located in Guilford. We last visited that DeRaffele diner about a month ago.

A few weeks ago we read Rolando Pujol's article on the former Market Diner. We emailed him about another closed diner in NYC. This one last operated as the Rib Restaurant. amNY posted an article yesterday with an update on that 1950's Kullman diner. It's another diner with a Michael Perlman connection.

Be sure to visit Tom Fletcher's site for pictures of the diner when it operated as Lunchbox Food Company and several owners before that as the Terminal Diner. Agilitynut has pictures as well as a short history here.
