In the News - Former Jerry's Diner

As an update, our first post about this 1920's O'Mahony diner in Kent, Ohio was in our July 8th blog entry. A little over a month later we updated that post, noting a planned event for the diner prior to the auction. This post was updated again on the 12th of this month when a new Record-Courier article appeared online. Deborah Guziak's article shares memories of the diner from several people at the party. At the end of her article she noted Mike Zenone of North Olmsted is interested in acquiring and restoring the diner.

Matt Fredmonsky of the Record-Courier provides an update today on the diner. His article states Mike Zenone was the successful bidder. Ending price was fifty dollars. Over the years this O'Mahony diner has suffered from neglect and deteriorated. Mr. Zenone estimates only a small percentage of the original diner can be saved.

We'd recommend Mr. Zenone contact Richard J. S. Gutman, director and curator of the Culinary Arts Museum at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I. Not only has Mr. Gutman restored diners and consulted on the restoration of many others, he is recognized as the leading authority on the subject of diners and their history. We should note Mr. Gutman has another book in the works. The subject of this one? O'Mahony diners. Also, someone may want to put Mr. Zenone in touch with Steve Harwin of Diversified Diners. Steve Harwin is well versed in diner restoration. He's brought back many diners that some declared beyond restoration.

Mr. Zenone certainly has a challenge ahead of him. We wish him the best on his project. More information will be posted here about the restoration as it becomes available.

The The Patriot-News Co. mentioned the former Tom Sawyer Diner on North Second Street in Harrisburgh, Pennsylvania. It was moved from storage, arrived onsite, went through renovations and then opened in May 2006. During this time the Tom Sawyer name was retained and the diner was open for a little over a year. It reopened on October 5, 2007 as Konnichiwa and quickly closed again about two weeks later. The 1958 DeRaffele diner saw more changes and opened again, this time under the name Sawyer’s Cantina.

10/30/2003
Jill Kaiser Dion reported in the Milford Mirror that the Milford Diner in Milford, Connecticut, would be moving a short distance away to a site on Melba Street. A local businessman had purchased the diner, though lost ownership through the court system. When we visited the diner in May 2007, it was still at its New Haven Avenue address and closed.

In the News - Gary Geiser

If you are outside of Colorado Springs, Colorado, you might not recognize the name Gary Geiser. Gary has owned the King's Chef Diner, a 1955 Valentine diner since 1977.

We've seen Gary's name in the news twice within the last few days. First was Nathaniel Glen's article from October 23rd's The Gazette. Mr. Glen's article is a review of the King's Chef which opened this past July. While not a manufactured diner, this location on Bijou Street represents an increase in seating capacity as compared to the thirteen seat Valentine diner.

Next is Teresa Farney's article also from the Gazette that appeared in Today's Trading Markets.com site. She writes about Gary's latest venture; hot sauce. Ms. Farney reports bottles of King's Chef chili sauce arrived in Whole Foods Market stores on October 11, 2008. In doing a little more research, we found another article mentioning Gary's green chili. Another Gazette writer, Andrew Wineke wrote on January 22, 2005 that Gary would make an appearance on tonight's Food Network program, "Al Roker's Diner Destinations."

Star Diner - Rumford, RI

Star Diner, ©2008 DinerHistory.com file
photo
Our last post about the Star Diner was on January 20, 2008. At that time we spoke with the owners and they had expected to be open in February. In the subsequent months, whenever we were in the area, we'd stop by only to find the diner still closed. Today on the way to the Liberty Elm Diner we stopped to check on the diner. We noticed the sign that was in front of the diner was gone. Though a car was parked in front and we saw people inside. During a quick chat with the owners, they are now hoping to be open by Mid-November. Quentin Sanford spoke of the things needed to comply with various regulations. He said there is another inspection this coming week.

News about the diner reopening might have been enough. We also learned that the diner will have its screen time. A crew from the Showtime series "The Brotherhood" will be there filming next week. We were told the crew will be shooting both exterior and interior scenes of the diner. Whenever filming is done in a vintage diner, it may present some unique challenges. In back of the diner is a trailer park where additional scenes are to be shot. While it may be for the small screen, it's a good opportunity for this Rhode Island diner to have its time in the spot lights.

After hearing this news, it caused us to check our database. We found another 1950's DeRaffele diner also having it's screen time. When we visited White's Diner mid-November 2007, we were told of their recent film credits. The film Righteous Kill, starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino includes scenes shot at the diner two months prior.

Weekend Roundup

As we mentioned in our Thursday's post, the Liberty Elm Diner was visited by the Projo's food editor. We stopped in today for a late breakfast. While we catch up with Kip, Tink and the gang, check out the rest of our post.

The Weekend Roundup feature draws from some of the postings we made during this past week. It's purpose is a quick summary and one area of the blog where we usually don't include map links or pictures. At times we may include other items here not making the blog that may be of interest to our readers. We'd like to hear your comments or suggestions.

Three diners were added to the database. Olga's diner remains closed. It was announced that the new location of the Red Arrow Diner in Milford, New Hampshire will open this coming Monday. There were no news reports of any classic diners being demolished, constructed, installed, moved, or sold. Please let us know if we've missed something diner related happening this past week.

The following diners were added to the database:

While we were at the diner, they were working on getting their new sign mounted to the pole out front. The picture above shows the sign as it sat up against the diner.

In the News - Former Skee's Diner

Skee's Diner, © 2008 DinerHistory.com

What's in store for the former Skee's Diner? Walt Gogolya wrote an article for today's Register Citizen updating us on the situation.

We first saw the announcement of this project back in January. In March 2008, we checked in on this 1926 O'Mahony diner. The diner was in about the same shape as our prior visits. It will need restoration, the extent of which is yet to be ascertained. As this diner is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it will be a challenge for this structure to become compliant with the multitude of government regulations once it moves. It's listing may be in jeopardy as a result of these modifications.

We'll post more information as it becomes available. Meanwhile, Walt Gogolya's entire article may be read here.

Olga's, a 1960's Fodero Dining Car Company diner located in Marlton, NJ, is in the news again. Between financial difficulties and proposed construction plans, it seems its future in limbo. The big question is when the proposed overpass from almost four years ago, will be constructed--or if. Many in the community are in opposition and have created this website.

A picture of Olga's exterior may be seen in startcoloring's flickr photostream. Olga's reminds us of a Fodero diner in Connecticut we photographed in 2007. The Blue Sky Diner, though smaller, retains the same style lines and exterior, with different color panels below the windows.

The Trolley Car diner, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is in a similar situation. The street in front of the diner has been torn up since January. We've seen several reports about the detrimental impact to businesses in the area and hope that situation is resolved soon.

A quote from the article in our post on the Mt. Pisgah diner seems appropriate.

"'Growth is inevitable. We learned (Friday) that it's desirable,' he said. 'The destruction of community character is not.'" -- PLAN NH President Michael J. Castagna

There was another Olga's Diner, though it was located in Camden, NJ. This one was a large early 1950's Mountain View diner. Here's a link with photos of the diner.

Compiled from Worcester Telegram & Gazette articles.

On this date vandals set fire to the diner structure in Worcester's Cristoforo Colombo park. At the time of the fire it was being used for other purposes. A few days later two youths were arrested and charged with arson.

The city moved the charred remains into storage at the Worcester airport. During December of the following year, it was reported that Preservation Worcester arranged for Michael O'Connor to acquire the diner.

Restoration of the diner is an ongoing process. flickr member dustboy4 has some pictures of the diner in his photostream. These exterior and interior photos show some of the arson damage. The Thomas Bros. Furniture website identified the structure as Worcester Diner #705. It was built by the Worcester Lunch Car Company in 1933. According to the diner drawing* in Charles Gemme's notebook, it was delivered to Salem, New Hampshire on June 14, 1933 and called the Park Diner.

Former Fairfield Diner and Vegetarian Enclave - Fairfield, CT

On this date in 2005 the Fairfield Diner and Vegetarian Enclave closed. The Anthis family had operated this diner since 1993. Prompting closure of the diner is the expansion plan of the car dealership next door. As seen in the picture taken about a year ago, some of the environmental style exterior has fallen off.

This diner was formerly known as the Eldorado Diner. According to Mike Engle, the diner was manufactured by Kullman in 1990. We should note that Mike collaborated with Mario Monti on the book entitled, "Diners Of New York."

The Anthis family owns another diner, the Shoreline Diner & Vegetarian Enclave located in Guilford. We last visited that DeRaffele diner about a month ago.
