In the News - Reading Diner

The former Fegely's Reading Diner was the subject one of our posts last month. At that time David Meekel had written an article in the Reading Eagle saying the diner's future was in question. He's written a follow-up article for today's edition of the paper. According to this article, plans for the diner have changed. The Archbury Foundation is working with officials from Exeter Township to move it the Antietam Valley Recreation and Community Center--about a half mile away from its current location.

We'll post more information as it becomes available.

In the News - Reading Diner

David Mekeel of the Reading Eagle wrote today the future restoration of the diner is uncertain. We wrote of the Reading Diner in our October 20th blog post.

Mr. Mekeel's article includes thoughts from the land owners where the diner currently sits. While the restoration may be delayed, the diner shouldn't start falling apart. An O'Mahony diner was considered top of the line in regards to construction materials and methods. However, as it sits exposed there is the potential for the restoration team to encounter problems in the future. All successful restorations depend upon two things: determination and money. One without the other increases the potential for failure.

Today in Diner History. . .

On this date in 2005, the Reading Diner was carefully extracted from Fegely's Family Restaurant. Amongst the spectators were representatives from the History Channel. They recorded the event for a episode of their Mega Movers show. A clip of the move is available here.

The diner itself was built in 1938 by the Jerry O'Mahony Dining Car Company. It was moved to a prepared foundation on Carsonia Ave. in Wyomissing, PA, where it awaits restoration by the Archbury Foundation. Visit Agilitynut's page for pictures of the diner she took in May of 2007.
