The former Jerry's Diner, once located in Kent, Ohio was in the news again. Our blog entry from December 22, updated our readers on Mike Zenone's restoration project. At that time he had removed a portion of the structure.

What you see in the picture at left, is no longer. Ravenna Record-Courier writer Steph Krell briefly noted it was torn down yesterday.

Former Jerry's Diner - Kent, Ohio

Some of the news articles we've read spoke of a fire, but we never saw any pictures. When looking through the results from a Google blog search, we found Dave Ruller's Kent 360 blog.

Dave's blog mentions the diner and has two pictures showing the interior damage. He included other pictures, the last one a vintage photograph showing the inside of the diner in 1952. We aren't sure if Bill Nay, who brought the diner there in 1945, is the gentleman pictured behind the counter. That photograph also shows a number of renovations to the diner. Notice the Campbell Soup cans on the shelf in the lower right corner.

About a week ago, flickr pro planetschwa uploaded two recent pictures of how the site looks after the diner was removed. We've included one in this post, and here's the other taken from a different angle.

Though the diner has had a number of owners and renovations over the years, it's thought to have been built by Jerry O'Mahony Dining Car Company in the 1920's. Dan's Diner may be similar to what the diner originally looked like. As we find more information about the diner and the progress of its restoration, we'll post it online.

In the News - Jerry's Diner

Matt Fredmonsky staff writer for the Record-Courier has written a series of articles about Jerry's. He wrote another recently that mentioned the former Jerry's Diner was removed from its foundation in preparation for transportation. Mike Zenone purchased the remains of the diner at an auction last month. His plans are to restore the diner and reopen it to the public.

When the restoration is complete, it's possible the diner may look similar to Dan's Diner, in New York.

In the News - Former Jerry's Diner

As an update, our first post about this 1920's O'Mahony diner in Kent, Ohio was in our July 8th blog entry. A little over a month later we updated that post, noting a planned event for the diner prior to the auction. This post was updated again on the 12th of this month when a new Record-Courier article appeared online. Deborah Guziak's article shares memories of the diner from several people at the party. At the end of her article she noted Mike Zenone of North Olmsted is interested in acquiring and restoring the diner.

Matt Fredmonsky of the Record-Courier provides an update today on the diner. His article states Mike Zenone was the successful bidder. Ending price was fifty dollars. Over the years this O'Mahony diner has suffered from neglect and deteriorated. Mr. Zenone estimates only a small percentage of the original diner can be saved.

We'd recommend Mr. Zenone contact Richard J. S. Gutman, director and curator of the Culinary Arts Museum at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I. Not only has Mr. Gutman restored diners and consulted on the restoration of many others, he is recognized as the leading authority on the subject of diners and their history. We should note Mr. Gutman has another book in the works. The subject of this one? O'Mahony diners. Also, someone may want to put Mr. Zenone in touch with Steve Harwin of Diversified Diners. Steve Harwin is well versed in diner restoration. He's brought back many diners that some declared beyond restoration.

Mr. Zenone certainly has a challenge ahead of him. We wish him the best on his project. More information will be posted here about the restoration as it becomes available.
