In the News - Star Diner

After many years of anticipation, we can now report the Star Diner in Rumford, RI quietly opened yesterday. The Providence Journal has a video clip here about opening.

We last wrote about the Star Diner in our January 25, 2009 blog entry. At that time an article appeared in the Pawtucket Times mentioning the diner would open soon.

Grand Opening? This was slipped in towards the end of Donna Kenny Kirwan's article. She also wrote in her Pawtucket Times article, dated January 26, 2009, that the diner was used as a location for "Manifest Breakfast."

We've awaited the opening of this 1950's DeRaffele built diner for as long as we can remember it being there. This blog has written about the diner several times. It will be good to see it open and expect to write about that experience soon.

During our recent Pennsylvania diner trip, we saw a similar diner. The American Dream Diner located in Harrisburg. It shares the same structural style and accent color. Some noticeable differences exist between the two diners. Such as include a centered vestibule clock. Below the windows there are three narrow enameled turquoise color bands, instead of the two wide bands as seen above. Narrow color matched vertical flutes are used below the corner windows, in contrast to the Star's wide flutes.

On the interior the Star has a distinct hood over the back bar, which the American Dream doesn't have. The stool style; pedestal and tops, and floor are another similarity.

With the number of diners DeRaffele built, there may be other diners such as the Star and American Dream out there. If you know of one, please let us know.

We'll post more information as it becomes available.

Star Diner - Rumford, RI

Our last post about the Star Diner was on January 20, 2008. At that time we spoke with the owners and they had expected to be open in February. In the subsequent months, whenever we were in the area, we'd stop by only to find the diner still closed. Today on the way to the Liberty Elm Diner we stopped to check on the diner. We noticed the sign that was in front of the diner was gone. Though a car was parked in front and we saw people inside. During a quick chat with the owners, they are now hoping to be open by Mid-November. Quentin Sanford spoke of the things needed to comply with various regulations. He said there is another inspection this coming week.

News about the diner reopening might have been enough. We also learned that the diner will have its screen time. A crew from the Showtime series "The Brotherhood" will be there filming next week. We were told the crew will be shooting both exterior and interior scenes of the diner. Whenever filming is done in a vintage diner, it may present some unique challenges. In back of the diner is a trailer park where additional scenes are to be shot. While it may be for the small screen, it's a good opportunity for this Rhode Island diner to have its time in the spot lights.

After hearing this news, it caused us to check our database. We found another 1950's DeRaffele diner also having it's screen time. When we visited White's Diner mid-November 2007, we were told of their recent film credits. The film Righteous Kill, starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino includes scenes shot at the diner two months prior.

Star Diner - Rumford, RI

After the tragic fire at the Station Nightclub in Rhode Island, several laws have either changed or been enacted in an attempt to prevent something like this from ever happening again. Complying with all the regulations is a necessary, but time consuming and expensive process which can delay an opening. As that topic is beyond the scope of this posting, you should seek the advice of professionals. Back in July 2007 we heard that preparations were being made to reopen the Star Diner. We weren't sure what to make of it, as every time we went by the diner it seemed to always look the same. A reader passed along to us that they had driven by the diner and noticed Christmas lights on, although the diner didn't appear to be open.

After stopping at the Liberty Elm, we found ourselves in Rumford, RI this morning and stopped by the diner. A quick chat with the owners revealed they had hoped to be open this month. Although working through all the necessary steps have delayed things and they are expecting to be open in about a month.

We look forward to this diner being open again and will post further information here as it becomes available.
